2020 Jean-Claude Lapalu 'Brouilly' Beaujolais
We think Jean-Claude Lapalu is one of the most underrated producers of Beaujolais, arriving to the scene just after the famous ‘gang of four’ (Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet, Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre) these guys were responsible for Beaujolais’s reincarnation as a serious wine producing region.
This Brouilly comes from densely planted 60-80 year old gamay vines grown biodynamically. The winemaking is a la naturale, with carbonic maceration, a production technique made famous by the region that extracts some colour from the grapes but little tannin and which lead to softer, fruity wines. Coupled with stainless steel elevage, this is bright and vibrant and with concentration that proves Beaujolais village can stand up to the single Cru’s. Tres bien monsieur Lapalu, tres bien.
